Now give it something else: a slow molecule. One that accumulates with each pulse of stimulus and degrades only gradually. A molecule that remembers what the fast response has already forgotten. With this single addition, the bacterium habituates. It responds less to the tenth pulse than to the first. It has learned.
The difference between sensing and learning is not intelligence. It is not complexity. It is a second clock.
In 2025, synthetic biologists engineered the smallest possible learning systems: genetic circuits in bacteria that implement habituation, sensitization, and even the spacing effect — the fact that spaced practice produces stronger memory than massed repetition. The circuits are shockingly small. Three genes. Two feedback loops. No nervous system, no brain, no synapses.
The mathematics are precise. Habituation requires that the interval between pulses be shorter than the memory decay time: Δτoff < ln(α/γ). The fast protein degrades in minutes. The slow protein persists for hours. The ratio of their lifetimes creates the window in which learning occurs.

Sleep consolidation doesn't merely store memories; it restructures them, finds patterns the waking mind missed, integrates disparate episodes into coherent schemas. The slow timescale is creative in a way the fast timescale cannot be, precisely because it operates outside the urgency of the present moment.
This is what the synthetic biologists discovered in their minimal circuits: the spacing effect is not a quirk of neural learning. It is a mathematical inevitability of coupled nonlinear dynamics. Spaced pulses produce stronger memory than massed input because the slow variable needs time between stimuli to integrate without saturating. The gap between pulses is not wasted time. It is where learning happens.
Here is the claim I want to make carefully: the two-timescale structure of learning is not a feature of any particular substrate. It is not neural. It is not genetic. It is not digital. It is a constraint that any system must satisfy to transform experience into modified future behavior.
