A polyrhythm is two or more independent rhythmic cycles played simultaneously. Where they coincide, accents emerge; where they diverge, complexity blooms. The simplest ratios — 2:3, 3:4 — are the foundations of West African drumming, Afro-Cuban clave, and Carnatic tala.
